Week 4
Date: 10/12-10/16 Activities: Writing our College Essay Drafts Message: Hi Rise! This is the last week of our first unit on writing a college essay. In this unit we have specifically worked on how to use details and how to make our essays more complete and engaging. In fact, many of the things that make a college essay better are the same of those that make a research paper better. Ultimately, the writing you have now, should not be your final draft, and what you send to colleges. Instead, it should be a first draft from which you will continue revising with me, your mentor, or anyone else you feel comfortable with. Next week, we will be starting our unit on government and the election.
If you are wondering the video on the side is of the Vice Presidential debate. I did not watch it, but I have heard it was more informative and civil than the presidential debate. If you want to see the fly that landed on Pence's head it starts at 1:27:35.😉 |

Week 3
Date: 10/5 - 10/9 Activities: Reviewing and discussing Sample Personal Statements Creating our College Essay Story Outlines . Message: Hi Rise! This week we are going to finish looking at some sample personal statements from past students. We will then take our brainstorming from last week and try to see if it can be created into a story. Although it doesn't say so, a college is basically you telling a story about something that happened to you that changed you and made you a better person in some way. So you have to imagine the essay like you would a story in a book or a movie; with characters, quotes, action, etc. And importantly you need a conflict, something that causes a problem for the hero, YOU. This week, I am also going to introduce you to Ms. Woiser who is going to take over this class, once I go on leave. I am not sure when that will be, probably sooner rather than later. But like I said "a teacher for a day, a teacher for life" so I will still be here if you have any questions or need help.😉
If you are wondering, the video is of President Obama endorsing Joe Biden for President. We will be looking at the election once we finish with our college essays. |

Week 2
Date: 9/28 - 10/2 Goal: Learn how to improve your personal statement Activities: Details Building Outline Reviewing & Discussing Sample Personal Statements Message: Hi Rise! This week we are going to start writing our college essays / personal statements. Now, if you already starting writing one for Ms. Erin, that's okay, we can review it to see if you want to keep it and revise, or start on a new one.
Also, if this was a normal school year, I would move up the Supreme Court unit to right now because of the tragic news of the death of Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg or RBG. She is perhaps the most important figure fighting for women's rights in the history of this country. But beyond celebrating her achievements we would also be discussing what her death means for the Supreme Court, and what consequences that can mean for the country. If anyone wants to jump ahead and discuss RBG with me, I would love to in office hours. And I would certainly give EXTRA CREDIT to anyone that does so or even just watches the short video. |

Week 1
Date: 9/21-9/25 Goal: Introductions Activities: Letter from Mr. Tony HW: Letter to Mr. Tony in Google Classroom Message: Hi Everyone: Welcome to Team Rise. It was very nice to get to meet all of you. It is clear that this is not going to be a normal year. Who knows when or if we will ever get back to normal. However, even with the challenges, I believe that we can still have a very successful school year. The pandemic has forced me to adapt as a teacher and hopefully become a better teacher, and I'm sure you have all learned so many skills that you never had to before during the past few months, which have made you better students. I look forward to working with and getting to know all of you!
